Harmaa Rinne Festival 2025, a winter festival by the ski slopes. Artists on stage, the crowd in winter gear, and the days on the hill.

Harmaa Rinne is a Hartwall winter festival, set up by the ski slopes and a ski jump. Sunborn Live Finland, the producer, booked me. I photographed the 2025 edition over two days, 28 and 29 March.

The stage stood at the foot of the hill, so the audience stood outdoors in snow gear and the sky and the slope were part of almost every frame. I photographed the artists from the stage, looking back at the crowd, and the crowd from the front. In between were the smaller moments: the hot drink stand, two friends sharing a cup, the people working behind the stage.

Some of my favourite frames came from up the hill. Above the cloud line the snow is bright and flat, and the festival looks very small: a few people with snowboards and a video camera, and the whole valley behind them.

Cold changes how a festival looks. By day the light is bright and even, and once it gets dark the stage lighting takes over, so I planned for two different looks and kept my moves between them short.
